SIGITE/RIIT 2012 » ACM Conference on IT Education/Research » Calgary

  • Calgary is a vibrant modern city with a population over 1.3 million, making it the fourth largest city in Canada. It is Canada’s most dynamic city, and is the business and financial center of Western Canada with the strongest economy in Canada. Forbes Magazine has nominated Calgary as one of its World Capitals of the Future.

Host of the 1988 Winter Olympics, Calgary has an exciting cultural scene, ample shopping, and world-renowned restaurants. It was ranked #1 in the entire world in terms of its Quality of Living by Mercer’s Eco-City rating. The Economist ranked it #5 in the world in its Most Livable City in the World survey, and the Canadian Council on Learning rated Calgary as both Canada’s Most Cultured City and Canada’s Smartest City.

From peaks to plains, Calgary has also been blessed with abundant natural beauty. Calgary also sees more days of sunshine than any other Canadian city.

Whether it be rugged mountain parks, rolling prairies, boreal forests, or desert Badlands, there is no shortage of natural recreations in the near vicinity of Calgary.

For the conference we will be arranging a Thursday afternoon outing in Banff, which is about an hour’s drive away.

Plan on spending time after the conference (and Sunday) exploring the many natural attractions within a short drive of Calgary. Your work won’t need you back until Monday!

Drumheller is only a scenic 90 minute drive away. Experience desert badlands and the world-famous Royal Tyrrell Museum, which is Canada’s only museum dedicated exclusively to the science of palaeontology. In addition to housing one of the world’s largest displays of dinosaurs, the Museum offers a wide variety of creative, fun, and educational programs that bring the prehistoric past to life.

If exercise and adventure are what you are looking for, Calgary boasts the largest urban bike path system in North America, with over 400 km / 250 miles of pathways. If you’ve brought your children, hang out and enjoy the view of the Rockies at Calaway Park, just outside the city limits.
